Porcelain Dolls
In the Basic (learner’s) Cycle, students were introduced to the delicate craft of porcelain doll making through the creation of a newborn baby doll with closed eyes, 55 cm long, with three porcelain limbs. Over three three-hour lessons, they followed each stage from casting to assembly, gradually seeing the doll come to life in their hands. The course cost included all necessary materials except clothing; due to the doll’s realistic size, students could dress it in real newborn garments of their choice. Firing costs for the three firings required were not included, allowing participants to select the timing and finish they preferred.
The Learner’s Cycle invited students to take their skills a step further. First, they learned to make a baby doll with open eyes, again 55 cm long, this time with five porcelain limbs connected with skeletal ligaments, which gave the figure a more articulated structure. They then progressed to creating a smaller doll, 40 cm high, with six porcelain limbs joined by elastic ligaments, exploring a different type of movement and posture. This more advanced included the necessary materials except clothing and firing (four firings), making it possible for participants to personalise their dolls’ appearance and final finish. To ensure close guidance and a warm workshop atmosphere, the maximum number of participants in the porcelain doll courses was limited to eight.
